We live in a society desperate for happiness. Simply peruse the Self-Help section of your nearest bookseller and count the number of titles on the subject. We want it, we chase it, and we struggle to find it.

The question is: why? Why is “happy” such an elusive concept?

Perhaps it’s because we’ve put it on a pedestal — formulating specific equations on how to achieve it in the process. In the same breath, it might be a result of how much we already have.

We have the ability to search for, buy, and ship any product under the sun almost instantly. We are also seemingly more “connected” to each other than ever before thanks to technology. And yet, our physical things, smartphones, and social media networks are only serving to make us more self-conscious, lonely, and, undoubtedly, less happy.

Sure, you can meditate, read every book, and hope to receive the answer needed to achieve fulfillment. Or, you could change your perspective to turn the focus from yourself to others.
